Central Europe and European Nature of Russia

Karpow, Filip

The article investigates relations between Russia and Europe in close connection with the differentiation of European space. I focus on the problem of historically variable borders of Europe and the opposition between “Eastern and Western Europe”. Perceiving Russia as the Asian part of the continent influenced the ambivalent relation towards Western Europe (illustrated by the debate between the Westernizers and the Slavophiles). From this point of view the concept of Central Europe disturbs the dualistic structure of Europe and questions the role of Russia in the European cultural space. In my approach to certain European areas I use the concept of mental map – the narrative construct, which refers to a collective point-of-view perception of a particular region.
