Eastern Borderlands – Dream and Utopia. On the Unpublished Book by Melchior Wańkowicz
The article discusses the collection of “Borderlands reports” by Melchior Wańkowicz "Znowu siejemy w Polsce B" (We Sow Again in Poland B), written in the late 1930s, deposited in the Ossolineum Library and never before published in its entirety. The text illustrates the social and political situation in areas of ethnic rivalry, expressed by the reporter in the sentence “our border with the Soviets is trembling with anxiety.” It also reports and interprets the writer’s activities as a propagandist and agitator of the Border Protection Corps during the period of marking and stabilizing the eastern border of the Second Polish Republic. The vision of the Borderlands in Wańkowicz’s documentary and memoirs was confronted with the post-colonial studies, primarily with the interpretation of Daniel Beauvois and his research on the Eastern Borderlands.
