Necessary Lands – Necessarily Lost, or What Does the Polish Post-War Epic Need Ukraine for?

The author discusses two important post-war epic works: Włodzimierz Odojewski’s Zasypie wszystko, zawieje… and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s Sława i chwała to show how the authors use the theme of Polish east-south borderland in order to describe its historical and contemporary importance. Each of them represents a different view on Polish post-war history and this drives them to essentially different conclusions of their epics. The author of the article, using two important categories from Sigmund Freud – melancholy and mourning, interprets the two novels as representatives of a two-fold relation towards the land lost after World War II and helps to show an identity aspect of a choice a person made while stating his or her relation towards the issue in the Peoples’ Poland’s times.
